Missing My Papa

Posted August 29th, 2011 in General, Memories of Horst by Stephanie

I wake thinking of him, I go to sleep remembering him, in my dreams I love to see him and I do. It’s been over a year that my Papa has passed and it still hurts. I needed to see a photo, so I came here….when I need to hear his voice, I go to his Flickr page and play a video of him encouraging my J.J. to swim, it warms my heart. Loving & missing you Papa 🙂

Your daughter,

Stephanie

Fundraising Via Facial Hair

What began for me as a notion that I would pay tribute to my father by growing a beard every October, has transformed into a fledgling charity ‘event’ that is aimed to raise funds for cancer research as well as support and awareness. A few months ago I had the idea of the annual beard… and after thinking about it for a few days, I wanted to create some way of getting others involved. Why not try to spread the word and try to get other guys to do the same?

Introducing Octobeardfest. This will be an annual event that is aimed at raising funds for cancer research, as well as keeping awareness and support alive. Please go check out the site, and help spread the word around.

My main goal for putting up this web site was so that my father’s memory can be seen by friends and family who knew him, for those who care to search and find it, or even for those who just stumble upon it randomly. Since I put this tribute site together, I have been tracking the activity on it. On the first day the site was up, there were 174 visitors on the site that viewed over 1000 pages, the majority of them from people who came from a link that we left on his last flickr photo.

After the first month, I checked out the statistics and I am just amazed at the Continue Reading »

A poem for Papa

Posted June 29th, 2010 in General by neil

I received this email from my sister a few weeks ago, and I’ve been meaning to post it here. Such a great poem…. thanks Steph!

Hey Neil,

What I have attached is from a friend… she sent me this poem that really touched my heart.  This poem helped  when her mom passed away at 57 years old and I thought it might be OK to put on Papa’s memorial site.

With lots of love always,

Stephanie

About Page Update / Autism Society

Posted June 1st, 2010 in General by neil

I’ve made some additions to the About page on the site. Some have inquired about what happened, so I’ve provided a short paragraph to that effect.

Also, some have been asking about a charity that Horst would have liked people to contribute to. The family has chosen the Autism Society of America as this was close to his heart. Thank you to any of you that donate in his memory!

Many of you know that my father was devoted to flickr.com and the people he knew there. He had made many friends in the online community there over the 4+ years he was on it. Those friends have created some areas on Flickr to pay tribute to and memorialize him. I’m sure there are many many more that the handful I have listed here. It’s clear that he had made a lasting impression in the friendships he forged at Flickr, and it’s really nice to see these tributes. Continue Reading »

Welcome

Posted May 17th, 2010 in General by neil

Thank you for visiting the Horst J. Bernhart Memorial web site. This site will contain memories and photos of Horst, along with some photos he took that were not published on his flickr.com photostream.

The content on this site is edited by me, Neil Bernhart… Horst’s youngest son. I will also be curating select photos (with help from my mother) taken by Horst and publishing them here on this site.

If you have any memories or message that you would like to share on this site, please contact Neil via email: neil@horstbernhart.com.
