Happy Birthday Papa

Posted October 4th, 2011 in Memories of Horst, Photos of Horst by neil

I took these photos back in spring of 2005, on our last trip to Brianhead, Utah. We used to go every year back in the late ’80s/early ’90s… probably 5 or 6 years straight. This last trip was extra fun because I took Lauren and Melanie along for their first time there. The girls took some snowboarding lessons, and my dad and I had some fun riding the slopes together.

Horst loved to snowboard, but unlike most skiers-turned-snowboarders, he still enjoyed skiing as well. So, he would rent a board on a day he would spend boarding. He definitely held his own on the slopes, and even though he fractured his ankle once while doing it a few years before this trip… he still got back out on the board.

Happy Birthday, Papa. We all miss you and love you so much.

Some Photos On Father’s Day

Thinking of Papa on this Father’s Day, and enjoying time with my own kids. I thought I’d share a few photos.

This is one of my favorite photos of my dad with me and my brothers. He set the camera up on a tripod and got this self group-portrait.

Here’s one that he took of himself with daughter, Stephanie… out fishing.

Some of his last photos taken

My mother found a few photos in the catalog my dad kept on his computer. These photos are a few of the last ones that he took, on April 17th of 2010… one year ago this past Sunday. He was working on taking photos of everyday items that were in the shape of a letter.

Although they’re not anything really special, it’s nice to take a look back to see what he was doing at that time.

Field Of Daisies

This is a previously unpublished photo that Horst took; the first one that we’re putting on his site. I’m not quite sure why he hadn’t put it up on flickr, because I think it looks fantastic. He always was so fascinated with shallow depth of field and bokeh in photographs. Perhaps it wasn’t technically up to par with what he was trying for. Regardless, I believe that it is worthy of displaying on this site.

Christmas 2008 Photobooth

Posted May 28th, 2010 in Memories of Horst, Photos of Horst by neil

Lauren and Papa - Christmas 2008

I was browsing my photostream on flickr and came across the photobooth images I did for Christmas 2008. We would normally do the group family photo, but I wanted to try something a little different.

I set up my camera on a tripod in front of a couch, and supplied a remote control to fire the shutter after 2 seconds. I set up a drape behind the couch to keep the background uniform. Everyone was instructed to take at least 3 or 4 photos of themselves, or sitting with someone else. They were encouraged to take more than that if they wanted to. Continue Reading »

Up, up and away...

Some comments from the last photo in his flickr photostream. I can assure you that the family does read them all.

Oh no!!!!!

I had to take a longer than expected leave from Flickr and am just finding out this sad news. Horst was one of my first contacts and a beloved member of this community.

One of the best things that happened to me was stumbling upon Horst’s magical photo stream. He had an enthusiastic passion for capturing and creating the most unique images – the anticipation of each new post was consistently met with the satisfaction of yet another masterpiece.

He always had the ability of making everyone feel special and as if their images alone were the best photos ever taken. He never missed an opportunity to compliment others with his wonderful words of wisdom and humor, a real treasure for those of us on the receiving end. It was an honor to have him as a friend. Many of you know that my father was devoted to flickr.com and the people he knew there. He had made many friends in the online community there over the 4+ years he was on it. Those friends have created some areas on Flickr to pay tribute to and memorialize him. I’m sure there are many many more that the handful I have listed here. It’s clear that he had made a lasting impression in the friendships he forged at Flickr, and it’s really nice to see these tributes. Continue Reading »
